Rainbow Kennels LLC is committed to providing the best care a kennel can provide, at an affordable rate for almost everyone, without sacrificing the quality of care your pet will receive. We strive to provide for your pet a safe, sanitary, loving environment and have been doing so since 1985.
Rainbow Kennels LLC, a dog boarding facility, was opened May 23, 1985 by Margaret McRae.
"Your dog's home away from home" has been the motto from the first day of business based on Margaret's time in the Marines. We also like "Warm hearts for cold noses". Thousands of beloved dogs have been brought to Rainbow Kennels for boarding, grooming and obedience training services.
Margaret McRae decided to open Rainbow Kennels because of her love of dogs. A small boarding kennel with large, medium and small dog runs made out of concrete floor, block walls. The rebar steel gates replaced normal chain link gates in 2008 for added safety. All dogs are kenneled in indoor runs. We provide air conditioning and heating depending on the time of year it is. There are two large outdoor areas, approximately 25' X 30' each. All runs are let outside, one run at a time with the utmost care, providing outside playtime between 3 to 5 times per day per run based on whether it is a weekday or weekend when we are open reduced hours. First thing in the morning is quite hectic. As someone has to be first and someone has to be last.
Margaret McRae, a lifetime member of Southeast Alabama Kennel Club, spent many years promoting obedience training and dog showing. She and various dogs she trained have attained approximately 17 AKC training titles in obediece. She was a certified good citizen judge for AKC and an Australian Shelpherd judge for several years. Margaret is well known and well respected by many people and made lifetime friends who shared her passion and love of dogs. She was featured in the newspaper many times over the course of her career and received numerous awards from the South East Alabama Kennel Club. Margaret still does obedience training at the kennel. She does still participate in a lot of the South East Alabama Kennel Club demos in the community. Margaret has a sense of humor and has a way of helping people customize the training to their specific needs. Many people today are showing their dogs because of the encouragement they received from Margaret.
Rainbow Kennels LLC except for a brief 2-1/2 year period from April 2003 until January 2006 has been owned and operated by a member of the family. Margaret's daughter, Betty Jo took over ownership January 18, 2006.
Betty brings to the kennel her expertise, knowledge and love of dogs. Her life prior to kennel ownership consisted in managing restaurants, newspaper classified, managing a cemetery and working at a local funeral home. Since she took over ownership of the family business, she continues to learn everyday. She herself did some showing in her teenage years in obedience and confirmation. During her teenage years, that is where she learned to groom. She did learn some show dog cuts. Betty has continued to train in basic obedience to her own dogs through the years and groomed her own dogs.
Many people in town know that Margaret bred cocker spaniels and rottweilers for 23 years. What started as home breeding quickly turned into a passion for quality and integrity breeding holding true to what the standards were for each breed based on what AKC guidelines were and are.
There are photo albums at the kennel that contains photos, award certificates and a more detailed history of the kennel. Feel free to ask to see the photo album.
